In partnership with ESCWA and CAMRE, UNEP/ROWA has jointly developed a 5-year regional Trade and Environment capacity building programme for Arab Countries, aiming at:
- Identifying priorities for capacity building activities and developing a long-term programme for the region
- Identifying a network of potential institutions to assist in implementing the capacity building work
- Setting the stage for collaboration between Ministries of Environment, Planning and Trade in order to integrate key environmental considerations into sustainable development issues as well as bilateral and multilateral negotiations.
Addressing Trade and Environment Priorities in the Arab Region
UNEP-ROWA is also active in promoting environmental economy, environmental costs, and MEAs in bilateral and multilateral trade agreements, including free trade zones, with due consideration to the competitiveness of the Arab products and markets (e.g., Regional Workshop on the Liberalization of Bilateral Trade in the Arab Region in Environmental Services Sectors, Cairo December 2003).
The Main Objectives:
- To enhance capacity of public and private sector decision-makers and organizations in the region to integrate the environmental dimension of sustainable development into their economic, trade and finance policies and practices, including corporate environmental and social management.
- To promote the implement macro-economic policies that integrate environmental considerations into trade, finance and development policies.
