With support from UNEP-DTIE/Chemicals and Secretariat of Basel Convention (SBC), and in coordination with CAMRE and the Basel Convention Regional Center (BCRC) in Cairo, UNEP/ROWA continues to promote the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions through involvement in the Arab Technical Team concerned with MEAs relevant to chemicals and wastes management (ATTCW). UNEP/ROWA and member states are also looking to the development of an integrated regional strategy on chemicals and wastes management, advocating principles of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), alongside sound management strategies.
In cooperation with Secretariat of Basel Convention, UNEP/ROWA has helped member states (Yemen) in developing their National Hazardous Waste Strategy and Work-Plans to implement Basel Convention. UNEP/ROWA has also been involved in the facilitation of numerous chemicals & wastes training workshops and events annually (e.g., Cairo, March 2001; Muscat, December 2002; Damascus, September 2003; Bahrain, May 2004; Damascus, July 2004; Beirut, September 2004; Kuwait, November 2004).
UNEP/ROWA has been as well advancing (with several member states) the proposal for a regional center and laboratory facility under Stockholm Convention, and discussing with the Arabian Gulf University the proposal to establish a regional Hazardous Wastes and Chemical Management Center (HAZWCC) in West Asia with the UN University
The main Objective:
-
To support relevant MEAs implementation (Basel, Rotterdam & Stockholm Conventions) in the region and reduce risks of exposure of people and the environment to chemicals, and to
strengthen information exchange and capacity building to promote environmentally sound &
integrated management of chemicals and the reduction of the release of Persistent Organic Pollutants
(POPs) & hazardous chemicals wastes, with the concept of Life Cycle (LCA).
-
To promote in the region the strategic approach to international chemicals management (SAICM) adopted by governments and widely accepted in the international community.
