UNEP/ROWA will continue to build on the implementation of the Regional Capacity Building Project on EMS (ISO 14001), which has trained principally over 120 SMEs in the region. This work included the issuance of EMS Training Kit and ISO 14000 Manual into Arabic (with AIDMO), in addition to a several regional publications.

UNEP/ROWA has also been taking the initiative to engage major industrial estates and cities in the region in its programmes (e.g., Jebel Ali, UAE; Jubail, KSA and Rousail, Oman). This involved the introduction of EMS, IEM & EIA programmes, other voluntary initiatives as well as the promotion of environmental management of industrial zones, preparation and response to emergencies and industrial accidents (e.g., UNEP’s APELL Programme).

UNEP/ROWA has been exploring with member states, CAMRE, ROPME-MEMAC, and the GCC Secretariat the feasibility of establishing a Regional APELL Center, or incorporating the APELL programme into the curricula of a relevant regional center with a mission on industrial and/or natural emergencies.

The Main Objectives:

  • To develop and improve the capacities of countries in the application of assessment methodologies and incentive tools (i.e. environmental impact assessment, valuation of environmental and natural resources, natural resource accounting and other economic instruments) and in the development and implementation of mutually supportive trade and environment policies
  • To Increase number of public and private sector organizations in the region (especially SMEs) adopting EMS (e.g., ISO), APELL and industrial Ecosystem concept; embracing Global Compact and publishing environmental sustainability reports on their performance following the Global Reporting Initiatives (GRI) Guidelines.
