With support from UNEP-DTIE, and in coordination with CAMRE, ALO, UNIDO and AIDMO, UNEP/ROWA is developing an Arab strategy to promote Sustainable Consumption and Production for the Arab Region. The current plan of UNEP/ROWA is to continue to promote Cleaner and Safer Production (CSP) in the region in cooperation with the “CP Arab Regional Fora” mentioned above. The CP work is done through capacity building (e.g., our roundtable meetings), promotion of establishment of NCPCs (help is provided to UAE, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria), initiation of CP pilot projects in relevant industrial sectors (on-going CP project in the edible oil industry in Jordan). Furthermore, UNEP/ROWA has linked the issues of CP and sustainable consumption (SC) with environmental management systems (through our regional ISO 14001 capacity building project in SMEs implemented in 2002-2004), industrial estates management, APELL, and voluntary initiatives all in terms of introducing the concept of LCA.

To promote Sustainable Consumption (SC) in the region, a platform is underdevelopment for awareness raising, capacity building and catalyzing stakeholders to exchange information and develop cooperative programmes. Guided by the 10-year framework on SPC, this has been pursued by approaching SC from governmental procurement angles, health related issues (e.g., adverse impacts of "junk food", leaded gasoline problems...etc.), and working with youth issues (Youth Exchange Initiative).

The Main Objectives:

  • To enhance Regional awareness of cleaner and safer production issues and improve knowledge and understanding of the use of environmental management tools and technologies for improving resource utilization and avoidance of pollution, facilitating the integrated implementation of environmental agreements and codes and supporting the establishment of National Cleaner Production Centers (NCPCs).
  • To enhance awareness within the region of the need for sustainable consumption patterns, and enhance capacity of governments, industry, public, NGOs and other organizations to make policy decisions and take appropriate action for their implementation
