Regional Consultation Meeting for West Asia 11 November -14 November 2007, Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain
About 30 representatives of environmental NGOs, women groups, Youth, and the private sector from 12 countries gathered at the Bahrain Medical Society in Manama for a three day meeting, at the initiative of the United Nations Environment programme (UNEP) in preparation for the 9th session of the UNEP Global Civil Society Forum (GCSF).
This year representatives at the regional consultation meetings and the Global Civil Society Forum will discuss policy issues related to: Globalization and the environment: Mobilizing finance to meet the climate challenge; UNEP Medium Term Strategy; Enhancing Major Groups Participation at UNEP’s Governance Level; and Global Environment Outlook 4th Assessment (GEO-4) Issues.
The meeting will start with the GEO launching, followed by a platform for a capacity building session aimed to improve participants’ understanding of assessment and reporting on the state of the world’s environment though the Global Environment Outlook (GEO) report process. GEO is UNEP flagship and most authoritative report, which not only assesses the state of the environment today but also outlines plausible scenarios for the future.
Manama meeting is expected to develop a regional message to be presented at the special session of UNEP’s Governing Council in Monaco in February 2008.
